Frequently Asked Questions

What is SW♥♥N Reads?

SW♥♥N Reads is a revolutionary new crowdsourced romance imprint dedicated to publishing books that capture the intensity and passion of teen love. It’s also an opportunity for undiscovered writers and avid romance readers to come together to make books they love happen. More than just another publishing imprint, SW♥♥N Reads Reads will be a community, one whose members are included in every step of the publishing process, from the initial discovery of the manuscript, to providing edit notes, designing covers, and marketing the finished books.

Who’s involved here?

SW♥♥N Reads is part of Feiwel and Friends, an imprint of Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, a division of Macmillan Publishers, which means that it is part of a recognized leader in children's publishing within a major worldwide publishing company, and that its titles will be sold and promoted as such.

The Founder and Publisher of SW♥♥N Reads is Jean Feiwel. She’s the Senior Vice President and Publisher of Feiwel and Friends and Square Fish, as well as the Publishing Director of Henry Holt Books for Young Readers, all imprints of Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group. She's spent over 20 years at Scholastic as the architect for their Trade Publishing programs and imprints—both paperback and hardcover. While at Scholastic, she created the Babysitters Club, Goosebumps, Animorphs, and the Dear America series. She also oversaw the publishing of the Magic School Bus series and the beginning of the Harry Potter books. Since joining Macmillan in 2006, she has published many bestselling and acclaimed authors, including Nancy Tillman, Marissa Meyer, Catherynne M. Valente, Ann M. Martin, Michael Grant, Katherine Applegate, and James Preller. She lives in Westchester County, New York with her family.

Working with Jean is the SW♥♥N Reads team: Holly West, Jean's assistant and co-pilot; Caitlin Sweeny, from the digital marketing team; and a group of dedicated publishing professionals with experience in all aspects of publishing, including editorial, sales, marketing, and more. They will also be key parts of the SW♥♥N Reads community.

How does it work?

Once the imprint officially launches in Spring 2013, we will open the doors to submissions. Writers and readers can join the SW♥♥N Reads community and then upload their manuscripts directly to the Web site. There, all members of the community can read, rate, and comment on the manuscripts. The highest-rated submissions will be read by the SW♥♥N Reads editorial board. The manuscripts they agree are SW♥♥N-worthy will be published in both print and e-book formats.

What’s the deal?

Once a manuscript is chosen by the community and the SW♥♥N Reads publishing team, the author will receive a $15,000 advance and a standard royalty-based publishing contract for world rights, including the following royalty rates: >

Is this an e-only thing or will there be print editions as well?

Every title chosen by SW♥♥N Reads will be published in both a trade paperback print edition and all e-book formats.

I’m a writer and I’m interested. What kind of manuscripts are you looking for?

We are looking for SW♥♥N-worthy, irresistible, unforgettable love stories for readers ages 14 and up. Novels can be set anytime, anywhere — and can be realistic, supernatural, dystopic, historical, or a mash-up of any sort. Stories can be happily ever after…or not, but we must be wowed by the intense romance of your story. Girl/boy, girl/girl, boy/boy — set our hearts afire!

What do I need to do to submit my manuscript?

Once the site goes live in Spring 2013, become a member of the SW♥♥N Reads community. Then, from your profile page, you will be able to use our online form to easily submit a completed novel, preferably between 50,000 and 70,000 words, accompanied by a Twitter-length (less than 140 characters) keynote — that is, one or two sentences that best and most enticingly describes your story — and a brief (around 125 words) synopsis.

Are you only publishing novels, or can I submit my short stories and novellas as well?

Currently, we are only accepting completed, fulllength novels, preferably between 50,000 to 70,000 words. We are not accepting short stories, novellas, outlines, proposals, or queries.

I’ve already finished the perfect manuscript for SW♥♥N Reads. Can I send it to you now?

Sorry, but no. We aren’t accepting any submissions until the site officially launches in Spring 2013. However, if you sign up for our mailing list, we will be happy to send you an e-mail reminding you to submit to us once the doors open this Spring.

I’m not really a writer, but I love romance. Do I have to submit something to join?

No! Readers are just as important to the SW♥♥N Reads community as the writers are. We need readers to rate the submissions and let us know which books are SW♥♥N-worthy!

I’ve already posted my manuscript on another site. Can I still submit it to SW♥♥N Reads?

Yes. Although we prefer exclusive submissions, as long as your manuscript has not been previously published in a print edition, it is eligible for SW♥♥N Reads.

Do I have to have an agent to submit to SW♥♥N Reads?

No. SW♥♥N Reads is committed to taking down the barriers of traditional publishing. You will not need an agent to join or submit.

I already have an agent. Does that mean I can’t submit?

No. We also accept agented submissions. However, the standard SW♥♥N Reads contract terms are not up for negotiation.

Can I edit my manuscript once it has been posted?

Sorry, but no. Once a submission has been posted to the site, it will no longer be available for editing. Making significant changes or edits to manuscript could interfere with the rating and commenting process. Please make sure that you have a finished draft that you are comfortable with BEFORE you submit it to the SW♥♥N Reads community.

Can anyone read the full manuscripts for free?

Yes. Anyone who has logged in to the SW♥♥N Reads site will be able to read the full text of any manuscript. And SW♥♥N Reads is completely free. There is no fee of any kind attached to membership.

Is my work protected?

We will do our best to protect your work from theft and plagiarism. We will not allow cutting, pasting, or copying from any SW♥♥N Reads submission. We also require all members of the SW♥♥N Reads community to agree to a set of community guidelines that legally prohibit anyone from stealing and reposting any content from SW♥♥N Reads.

How does the rating process work?

After reading a manuscript, you will have the chance to rate the submission on a scale of 0-5 hearts (Did Not Finish, Not for Me, It's Okay, I Like It, I love It, and Swoon-worthy) You can also add comments: indicate if it was steamy, a tear-jerker, laugh-out-loud funny, or action-packed; and tag the manuscript with descriptive keywords to make it easier for other readers to find. All your ratings, reviews, and comments will be collected on your personal profile page.

Spring 2013 is a long way away. What if I forget?

Not a problem. Click here to join our mailing list and we will be happy to send you a reminder when the launch date approaches and let you know whenever more information is available.

What if I can’t get my novel ready before the site launches?

That’s okay. SW♥♥N Reads is an ongoing imprint, not a one-time contest. Go ahead and sign up. We would love to have you as part of the community, reading, rating, and commenting until you feel ready to share your own submission.

I have other questions that aren’t covered here. How can I find out more?

We will be updating and expanding this page to cover more topics as we get closer to our launch date. But, for specific and immediate questions, please feel free to send us a message through our Contact Us page. We will do our best to respond, either individually, or via updates to our Frequently Asked Questions.
